In May of 2006, the CSMLS embarked upon a very exciting phase of its professional activities by adopting a new research mandate. The CSMLS has traditionally conducted membership-based research to support the operations of the society as well as small short-term projects targeted to specific needs of the profession.

However, current pressing issues within the health care system, including health human resources discussions, have highlighted huge gaps in profession-specific data and research on Medical Laboratory Science in Canada that are not being addressed within traditional academic research communities. To address these information gaps, the CSMLS has made a commitment to conducting and facilitating health services research about the medical laboratory profession in Canada.

The goals of the new research program include:

  • creation of a research database and resource-sharing strategies;
  • establishment of research networks, partnerships and support/mentoring mechanisms;
  • implementation of research projects and broad dissemination of findings;
  • adherence to high standards for ethical conduct of research and program accountability;
  • gathering data and creating knowledge that inform decision-making about health human resources issues and thereby contribute to high quality health care in Canada;
  • adoption and promotion of knowledge translation strategies.
