Laboratory Safety Guidelines, 6th Edition

Authors Gene Marie Shematek and Wayne Wood have reviewed and updated material from Edition 5 and added several new chapters to reflect trends in laboratory safety. New chapters include:

  • Hazard Identification and Assessment
  • Psychosocial Hazards
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Emergency Equipment
  • Laboratory Security

Major additions were also made to the chapters on Ventilation and Indoor Air Quality and Laboratory Safety Administration. The guidelines are available in print or on CD-ROM.

Errata

Please note the following corrections to the Laboratory Safety, CSMLS Guidelines, Sixth Edition 2006.

  • First Aid - Chapter 14, page 84
    In the section on Needlestick Injuries:

    The correct protocol is as follows:

    1. Encourage bleeding
    2. Clean the puncture site
    3. Apply a dressing
  • Biological Hazards - Chapter 5, Page 23
    When describing the HEPA filter particle size, 0.3 µm should be indicated (rather than 0.3 mm)

  • Biological Hazards - Chapter 5, page 19
    In the section on Effective Operating parameters for gravity displacement steam autoclaves:

The correct pressure should read:

  1. Pressure 103.4 kPa (15psi)
